There’s a moment, somewhere around your 40s, when different questions start to show up.
I’m 48 now, but I remember it all started around 40…
I kept hearing a voice whispering: “Is this really all there is?“.
Many of the women I meet carry this invisible question inside.
I’m one of them. “If I don’t have children, if I still haven’t figured out what I want to do with my life… am I still enough?“.
We live in a world that tells us that by a certain age we should have it all figured out:
The perfect job. The right partner. Clear direction. Rock-solid self-esteem.
But real life isn’t a form to fill out. It’s not an Excel spreadsheet.
I tried to follow the script
For years, I chased what I thought would make me feel enough.
I put on the “right costume“. I played the parts.
Flight attendant. Guest service agent on cruise ships. A job in the fashion industry, and much more (a thousand jobs, a thousand changes — because somehow “it was never enough“). I crossed oceans and time zones, reinventing myself over and over.
But deep down, I think I was always trying to fit into a story that wasn’t really mine…
Then something shifted.
I stopped trying to be the woman I was “supposed” to be.
And I slowly started to embrace who I really was… I began asking myself: “What do you truly want?“. Beyond all the social and cultural conditioning, beyond what you’re supposed to do at 40 — “Valentina, what do you actually like? What makes you feel alive?“.
Do you ever ask yourself that? And if you do… do you truly listen?
The myth of being late
Here’s what I deeply believe: there’s no such thing as being late in your own life.
Some women bloom early. Some take more time.
And some of us — especially those without children — find ourselves rewriting from scratch what it means to be a woman, on our own terms.
And on the topic of “us without children“, I want to come back to this in a dedicated post, because it deserves care and attention.
Reinvention is not easy. Starting over takes courage. It takes self-compassion.
And yes, sometimes it even takes falling apart — so we can rebuild.
You are not alone
Julia Child published her first cookbook at almost 50.
Vera Wang designed her first wedding dress at 40.
And I could go on… Lately, the social media algorithm keeps showing me tons of stories of women who started (late?!?) when the time was finally right for them.
Maybe you’re just getting started too?
If that’s the case, let me tell you: your path is not behind you. It’s right here. It starts where you are. Even if things aren’t clear. Even if you don’t have all the answers.
Here’s what I wish someone had told me back then:
- You don’t need to have everything under control.
- You don’t need children to be complete.
- You don’t need anyone’s approval to live fully.
- You don’t need to feel “young” to shine.
- What you do need is: clarity, courage, and a little faith.
And maybe… a quiet voice reminding you that “it’s not too late” and most of all, that “your story isn’t wrong — it’s just taking a new shape”.
